On Monday, January 23, at its midwinter meeting in Dallas, the American Library Association announced the winners of its 2012 awards for children’s and young adult titles.

At the 62^nd annual National Book Awards ceremony, held yesterday in New York City, stories of struggle were honored and the award winners, who included three women of color, gave voice to them. Also honored with lifetime achievement awards were Books & Books’ Mitchell Kaplan and poet John Ashbery.

On Wednesday, the finalists for the 2011 National Book Awards were announced in Portland, Oregon, as part of Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud morning radio program. This year’s list includes six titles chosen earlier this year by independent booksellers as Indie Next List Great Reads.
