San Francisco's City Lights Bookstore, founded by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, has been chosen as Publishers Weekly's Bookseller of the Year for 2010.

The owners and staff at all ABA member stores are invited to cast their ballots online to choose the winners of the 2010 Indies Choice Book Awards. The winners, to be announced in April, will be honored at BookExpo America 2010 in New York City.

The American Booksellers Association announced the finalists and opened voting on Monday, March 1.

Daniyal Mueenuddin Wins The Story Prize

The winner of the sixth annual Story Prize was announced on March 3 at an awards ceremony in Manhattan. Debut writer Daniyal Mueenuddin accepted the prize for his collection In Other Rooms, Other Wonders (Norton), a book of eight connected stories set in southern Pakistan and centering around the estate of a feudal landowner.The other two finalists were Victoria Patterson (Drift, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) and Wells Tower (Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned, FSG).

American Independent Business Alliance to Hold International Conference

The American Independent Business Alliance will be holding its second international conference in Tampa, Florida, from April 8 - 11. The local host for the gathering, which is aimed at business owners and others seeking to develop, or already engaged in, a local Independent Business Alliance or Buy Indie/Local campaign, will be Inkwood Books co-owner Carla Jimenez of the Tampa Independent Business Alliance.

Publishers Weekly is seeking nominations for its Bookseller and Sales Rep of the Year awards to be presented this spring at BookExpo America in New York City.

A nominee for Bookseller of the Year must operate a professional storefront retail bookstore in the U.S. and should excel in buying and vendor relations, marketing, handselling, customer care, community involvement, management-employee relations, merchandising, and business operations.

The Women's National Book Association this week announced the nominees for the 2010 WNBA Pannell Awards, recognizing retail bookstores that excel at inspiring the interest of young people in books and reading.

This year's awards, to one general bookstore and one children's specialty store, will be presented in May at BookExpoAmerica in New York.

Future of Current Health Care Bill Up in Air

Following the victory of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts' special election on January 19, one thing was certain: U.S. Senate Democrats had lost the 60-vote supermajority necessary to end a Republican filibuster, and, with that, a clear path to the passage of health care reform. PW Launches National Bookstore Day

Publishers Weekly is launching its first annual National Bookstore Day, a day dedicated to bookselling and bookstores, on Saturday, November 7. PW is inviting bookstores to participate.

This week, the National Book Foundation opened voting to the public to choose the Best of the National Book Awards Fiction.

Trade Show Season Starts

The fall trade show season kicked off last weekend in Portland, Oregon, where members of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association gathered for three days featuring educational programming, special author events, and exhibits.

On July 7, the National Book Foundation launched a new campaign celebrating the 60th anniversary of the National Book Awards that will culminate in a vote by the public this fall to choose the Best of the National Book Awards Fiction.
