Booksellers Encouraged to Cast Ballots for Book of the Year

The owners and staff of all ABA member bookstores can now vote for the 2006 Book Sense Book of the Year Awards. Presented to the authors of independent booksellers' handselling favorites in the categories of Adult Fiction, Adult Nonfiction, Children's Literature, and Children's Illustrated, the awards are a highlight of BookExpo America.

The ballot for the 2006 awards includes titles appearing on the 2005 Book Sense Picks lists. In addition, there is space for write-ins in each category. Only books published in 2005 are eligible.

BEA Taps Bilheimer to Oversee Special Events

On January 9, BookExpo America (BEA) named Roger Bilheimer to oversee special events at the annual trade show. Bilheimer is an independent consultant and has handled media and publishing industry relations for BEA for nine years. In addition to his new duties, Bilheimer will continue to oversee publicity and public relations for the show, as well as manage the press office on site.

Jon Stewart and Writers of The Daily Show Win Thurber Prize

On November 14, it was announced that Jon Stewart, David Javerbaum, and Ben Karlin, authors of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy In Action, won the 2005 Thurber Prize for American Humor. The annual prize is presented by Thurber House, the national literary center for writers and readers, based in the boyhood home of author, humorist, and New Yorker cartoonist, James Thurber in Columbus, Ohio.

NBC to Broadcast Quills Awards on Saturday

Books, authors, and literacy will take center stage on network television this Saturday, when 14 NBC Universal Owned and Operated Television Stations broadcast a one-hour Quill Awards television special, hosted by NBC's Al Roker and Jane Hanson. The show will feature the winners of the inaugural Quill Awards, which were announced on October 11 at a ceremony hosted by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams at New York City's Chelsea Piers.
