Navigating BookExpo America: A Checklist

With BEA less than two weeks away, now’s a good time to revisit a checklist of recommendations from booksellers who are masters at navigating the trade show and accomplishing key business goals while grabbing galleys, attending educational events, and making new connections.

Registration for Lunch and Tea With Children’s Authors Extended

The deadline for members of the ABC Children’s Group at ABA to register for the ABC/CBC Speed Dating Lunch With Children’s Authors and/or the ABC/CBC Tea With Children’s Authors and Illustrators has been extended to this Friday, May 17. Both events will be held on Friday, May 31, at BEA.

ABA Membership and Town Hall Meetings to Be Held May 30

ABA will hold its Annual Membership Meeting on Thursday, May 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Room 1E12/13 of the Javits Convention Center during BEA. It will be preceded by the Town Hall, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., also in Javits’ Room 1E12/13. All ABA members are encouraged to attend.

Hotel ABA to Host Two Parties for Indie Booksellers

All ABA member booksellers at BEA are invited to two parties at this year’s Hotel ABA, the Grand Hyatt New York. The events are opportunities to mingle with authors, catch up with old friends, and share in late-night cheer.

Last Call: BEA Focus Groups, the Celebration & ABC Group Special Events

This Friday, May 10, is the final chance for booksellers to sign up for several events exclusively for ABA members at BookExpo America.

Children’s Book Art Auctions: Online May 18, Live at BEA May 29

Booksellers, publishers, authors, and anyone else who loves children’s book art or feels strongly about kids’ right to read should be sure to have the Annual Children’s Book Art Silent Auction and Reception on their BEA calendars. For book industry professionals who can’t make it to the auction, those who just want to double their opportunity to bid on great art, and members of the public, ABFFE has added an online auction component.

Bookseller/Publisher Focus Group Signup Deadline Extended

ABA has extended the signup deadline for member booksellers who are interested in meeting with publishers to discuss issues of common interest and mutual concern at BEA. Two booksellers from each ABA member store now have until Friday, May 10, to register for the Bookseller/Publisher Focus Groups.

Colorado Bookseller Wins Grand Prize Hotel ABA Stay

Fifty-six prizes of free hotel nights at Hotel ABA — the Grand Hyatt New York — have been awarded to ABA member booksellers in a random drawing sponsored by BookExpo America.

Rare Signed Maurice Sendak Sketch to Be Auctioned at BEA

With double the number of works of art compared to last year, a special tribute to Maurice Sendak, and hosts Jack Gantos and Lauren Myracle, the May 29 Children’s Book Art Silent Auction & Reception at BEA is shaping up to be a stellar event. Thanks to a donation from the Estate of Maurice Sendak, auction participants will be able to bid on a sketch of Little Bear on tracing paper signed by the beloved author and illustrator.
