The Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 with an endowment from Joseph Pulitzer, an American newspaper publisher, to Columbia University to recognize significant achievements in journalism, letters, drama, and music. Prizes in letters are awarded in the categories of fiction, general nonfiction, history, poetry, and biography/autobiography, and include a $5,000 cash award.
