On Tuesday, 6/30, Rhode Island became the second state to require online retailers with affiliates in the state to collect sales tax. The fight for e-fairness is continues in North Carolina, California, Connecticut, and Hawaii, and it continues to gain momentum nationwide. New York State, a leader in leveling the playing field, has recouped $46 million in sales tax revenue since e-fairness legislation was passed last year. Booksellers can play a crucial role by contacting their elected officials to urge them to enforce current tax laws and treat all retailers fairly. At BEA, Ana M. Ma, chief of staff at the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Michael Goldman, a counselor for the NYC chapter of SCORE, spoke to independent booksellers about the commitment of the SBA and the Obama administration to small businesses, including independent bookstores. Ma discussed the America's Recovery Capital (ARC) loan program, which can loan up to $35,000 interest-free, and carries a 100% guarantee from the SBA to the lender. Goldman stressed that SCORE can help independent booksellers find the loan that is right for them, ARC or otherwise, even accompanying the store owner to the bank if necessary. >Read the full story ![]() 2020 Vision USA, a Sarasota, Florida, direct importer of reading glasses and sunglasses, has agreed to contribute $1 to ABFFE for every pair of glasses it sells to independent bookstores. Response to 2020 Vision's booth in the Booksellers' Lounge at BEA was very enthusiastic, raising $1,500 for ABFEE, with more orders to come. >Read more |
