At the PEN Gala in New York City on Tuesday, April 25, Chris Finan, director of American Booksellers for Free Expression, presented a check to Angela Gui, daughter of Gui Minhai, the Hong Kong bookseller who remains in custody on the Chinese mainland. The check included proceeds from the sale of the T-shirt that ABFE created to raise funds for the Free Gui Minhai Committee. Angela Gui has been leading the international campaign to win her father’s release.

Gui Minhai, the co-owner of Causeway Bay Bookstore, is one of five men connected with the bookstore who disappeared in the fall of 2015 and later resurfaced in police custody on the Chinese mainland. The bookstore is owned by Mighty Current, a publisher of gossipy and sometimes sensationalistic books about Chinese leaders.

Gui Minhai, a Swedish citizen, is the only bookseller who remains under arrest. The others were allowed to return to Hong Kong after months of detention.

At the gala, Angela Gui also accepted the Association of American Publishers’ Jeri Laber International Freedom to Publish Award on her father’s behalf. The Jeri Laber Award is given annually by the AAP International Freedom to Publish Committee (IFTPC) to a book publisher outside the United States who has demonstrated courage and fortitude in the face of restrictions on freedom of expression.

ABFE continues to sell the T-shirts, which can be purchased online for $20. Shipping and customization, including the addition of a store logo, is free.
