The latest American Express program designed to support small businesses offers merchants the opportunity to earn a $100 American Express® Reward Card to help defray the cost of purchasing EMV-enabled card readers for their point-of-sale systems. The program is open to retailers with less than $3 million in annual American Express charge volume.

To qualify, stores will need to provide American Express with their Merchant Account number or Access Code, the make and model of their point-of-sale system, and proof of purchase before April 30, 2015. Full terms and conditions are available on the American Express Merchant Services website.

Costs for upgrading to EMV-enabled technology vary by payment processor or terminal provider. Booksellers are encouraged to contact their payment processor or terminal provider to learn more about options for upgrading to an EMV-enabled point-of-sale system. American Express does not sell point-of-sale systems.

Details on what bookstore POS vendors are doing to prepare bookstores for the transition to chip technology, as well as key contact information, are available here.
