On Monday, as a possible record-breaking snowstorm was bearing down on the East Coast, the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation reminded booksellers that it stands ready to help those in need of emergency financial assistance. Storm-related assistance may be available if a state of emergency has been declared in a bookstore’s geographic area and the storm causes a financial hardship for the bookseller’s household.

Booksellers in need of assistance should contact the Binc Foundation at (866) 733-9064 or by e-mail to [email protected] to apply for the following types of assistance:

  • Immediate Disaster Assistance: Within the first 72 hours, Binc can help with emergency lodging or expenses related to evacuation, should that be necessary.
  • Post-Disaster Assistance: Binc offers help with storm-related expenses not covered by insurance.
  • Loss of Household Income Due to Disaster: Employees who have lost 50 percent or more of their scheduled income due to a disaster-related bookstore closure are encouraged to apply for assistance if the loss of income has created a financial hardship within their household.

The Binc Foundation also encourages people living in the storm’s path to heed all mandatory evacuation orders and to keep abreast of the situation by monitoring the following sites.
