Bringing Your Drupal IndieCommerce Site to Life

With all but a few stores’ website content now successfully copied, upgraded, and transferred to IndieCommerce’s new Drupal 7 (D7) platform, attention is turning to the final step of the migration: In April and May, all Drupal 7 sites will be established as “live” sites for customers.

IndieCommerce staff will contact each store soon with an assigned go-live date and any special instructions unique to a store’s circumstances. Go-live dates will be scheduled based on booksellers’ requests; request yours now by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

If a preferred date is not provided, one will be assigned. The schedule will follow roughly the same sequence as for the upgrade of site content: for example, stores upgraded in 2014 and January 2015 will be assigned first, followed by the February and March groups.

The following points are important to consider when choosing a go-live date:

  • Your current D7 site content should be up to date (events, book lists, etc.) and ready to serve on the live site “as is.”

  • If the site domain name is not hosted by ABA (GoDaddy and Network Solutions are popular alternative hosts), the site administrator should refresh his or her familiarity with the host account. Access to hosting information is required in order to make necessary changes the week the site goes live. If the site is hosted by ABA, IndieCommerce staff takes care of these matters.
  • On the assigned date, both the store’s D6 and D7 sites will be down for a period, usually for one to two hours.

An overview of the go-live process is available here and should be reviewed now and just before the assigned go-live date.

The goal is to finalize the D7 migration and retire the old Drupal 6 platform later this spring. This will enable IndieCommerce staff to focus on improving the Drupal 7 platform to ensure a better experience for all users.
