Mitch Kaplan to Announce National Book Award Finalists on NPR

At 8:40 a.m. ET on October 15, Books & Books’ Mitch Kaplan will appear on NPR’s Morning Edition to announce the 20 finalists for this year’s National Book Awards. This will be the first time the National Book Foundation (NBF) has announced the finalists on national radio.

“We are thrilled to be working with NPR’s Morning Edition and Mitchell Kaplan, one of America’s foremost booksellers,” said Harold Augenbraum, the National Book Foundation’s executive director. “NPR has the country’s best on-air audience for books and Mitchell is chair of one of the nation’s best book festivals.”

Kaplan is the recipient of the NBF’s 2011 Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community and is the cofounder of Miami Book Fair International.

Winners of American Poets Prizes Revealed

The Academy of American Poets announced the winners of its 2014 American Poets Prizes this week. The winners will be celebrated at the American Poets Prizes ceremony on October 17, at The New School in New York City.

Among the honorees will be Wendy Chen, the recipient of the inaugural Aliki Perroti and Seth Frank Most Promising Young Poet award for her poem “They Sail Across the Mirrored Sea.”

Corporate Communications Changes Announced at Penguin Random House

Stuart Applebaum has been named emeritus executive vice president, corporate communications at Penguin Random House. Applebaum has been with Random House for 43 years, beginning as a publicist for Bantam Books.

Claire von Schilling has been promoted to senior vice president, director, corporate communications, and will report to PRH CEO Markus Dohle. Von Schilling will manage internal and external communications, company branding, and corporate social responsibility.

Ingram Adds Two Distribution Clients

Ingram Publisher Services has added two publishers to its list of clients.

Magnet & Steel develops pet-related products including books, calendars, greeting cards, signage, and seasonal gift stationery. Ingram will manage the sales and distribution of its titles in the U.S. and Canada and will also provide print-on-demand and e-book content distribution services.

In the Sports Zone, LLC develops licensed and approved activity books for the National Football League and college leagues. Ingram is handling sales and distribution for In the Sports Zone in the U.S. and Canada.
