IndieCommerce: Website Security, SIBA16 Meetings & More

The August 24 IndieCommunication newsletter features updates on a move to HTTPS everywhere; one-on-one meetings at the SIBA trade show; a schedule change for ACH transfers; and other news.

HTTPS Everywhere

IndieCommerce sites currently encrypt all customer information and the checkout process. The next level of security is encrypting ALL pages. The biggest benefit to encrypting the entire site is the potential for better Google search rankings. It also ensures customer privacy.

The little green padlock that appears at the top of web browsers — the sign of an encrypted secure page — is reassuring to customers. To make website security more visible, future versions of web browsers will increasingly highlight the padlock.

Booksellers that are interested in helping IndieCommerce test “HTTPS Everywhere” across their entire store site should e-mail [email protected].

Meet With IndieCommerce at SIBA16

Stores can now register for IndieCommerce one-on-one sessions at the SIBA16 Discovery Show; walk-ins are also welcome.

Shipping Restriction Removed

The restriction on the IndieCommerce platform that forced stores to have at least two possible shipping quotes for any given order has been removed. The new default choice is that an order can have only one shipping method allowed.

Tips and Tricks

When adding an image to the store site, remember to add “alt text” for that image. This will help the site comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Instructions are available here.

Schedule Change for ACH Payment Processing of Orders

Due to staff vacations and the Labor Day holiday, ACH transfer for online orders will not be processed on September 1. Instead, they will be processed on Thursday, August 25, and then again on Tuesday, September 6.

IndieCommerce will resume its regular schedule for ACH transfers on Thursday, September 15.
