Man Booker Prize Announces 2017 Longlist

Man Booker Prize 2017 logoThe longlist for the 2017 Man Booker Prize was announced on Thursday, July 27. This year’s longlist, or the Man Booker “Dozen,” selected by a panel of five judges from a pool of 144 books published in the U.K. between October 1, 2016, and September 30, 2017, features:

  • Paul Auster (U.S.), 4 3 2 1 (Faber & Faber)
  • Sebastian Barry (Ireland), Days Without End (Faber & Faber)
  • Emily Fridlund (U.S.), History of Wolves (Weidenfeld & Nicolson)
  • Mohsin Hamid (Pakistan), Exit West (Hamish Hamilton)
  • Mike McCormack (Ireland), Solar Bones (Canongate)
  • Jon McGregor (U.K.), Reservoir 13 (4th Estate)
  • Fiona Mozley (U.K.), Elmet (JM Originals)
  • Arundhati Roy (India), The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (Hamish Hamilton)
  • George Saunders (U.S.), Lincoln in the Bardo (Bloomsbury)
  • Kamila Shamsie (U.K.-Pakistan), Home Fire (Bloomsbury)
  • Ali Smith (U.K.), Autumn (Hamish Hamilton)
  • Zadie Smith (U.K.), Swing Time (Hamish Hamilton)
  • Colson Whitehead (U.S.), The Underground Railroad (Fleet)

The Man Booker Prize for Fiction, first awarded in 1969, is open to writers of any nationality writing originally in English and published in the U.K.

The shortlist of six books will be announced on Wednesday, September 13, and the 2017 winner will be announced on Tuesday, October 17, in London’s Guildhall. The winner will receive £50,000.
