Amidst the many significant changes in the book industry, a number of indie bookstores have experienced double-digit growth over the past year. In an environment of both challenge and opportunity, it’s increasingly important for those exploring the possibility of opening a new bookstore -- or for those who are new owners -- to learn the fundamentals and best practices of indie bookselling and retail.

The upcoming workshop retreat, “Owning a Bookstore: The Business Essentials,” is an intensive training program facilitated by Donna Paz Kaufman and Mark Kaufman of The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates, that offers a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of essential aspects of the business and to establish a tangible competitive advantage.

The training program will be held in Amelia Island, Florida (near Jacksonville), and will run from Monday, September 10, through Friday, September 14. The week will include such key topics as planning and managing your money, using a computerized management system to effectively manage your inventory, creating a special sense of place, delivering exceptional customer service, and more.

Co-sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the workshop will include guest trainers to share their areas of expertise, including an overview of the ABA products and services. ABA members are eligible for discounted tuition.
