Philip and Erin Stead Added to Children’s Institute Lineup

Author Philip Stead and illustrator Erin Stead, the duo behind a variety of bestselling and award-winning children’s books, will take part in a featured talk at the American Booksellers Association’s fifth ABC Children’s Institute (Ci5), to be held April 5–7 in Portland, Oregon.

During the talk, the Steads will discuss their newest project, The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine, a never-before-published children’s story by Mark Twain that will be released by Doubleday Books for Young Readers this September. Frances Gilbert, the associate publishing director of Random House Books for Young Readers, will join the Steads in a conversation about how the story was found and the process of bringing it to the world.

Philip and Erin Stead are the author/illustrator team behind the Caldecott Medal-winning A Sick Day for Amos McGee, Lenny & Lucy, and Bear Has a Story to Tell (all Roaring Brook Press), as well as numerous other projects both solo and together. Gilbert is the author of I Love Pink!, a Step Into Reading leveled reader (Random House Books for Young Readers), and an abridgment of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden for Little Golden Books (Golden Books).

The Featured Talk With Philip and Erin Stead will take place on Friday, April 7, from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. (See the growing list of authors appearing at Children’s Institute here.)

There is still time to register for the Children’s Institute, but space is limited and there is a maximum of five registrants per ABA member business. The Ci5 conference fee is $99 per bookseller.

The ABA room block at the host hotel, the Red Lion Hotel on the River – Jantzen Beach, is sold out; however, booksellers can make reservations at the Oxford Suites Portland – Jantzen Beach, which is across the street from the Red Lion, by calling (800) 548-7848 and requesting the ABA rate of $129 per night, plus tax. Booksellers may cancel their Children’s Institute registration at any time by e-mailing [email protected]. Cancellations received prior to March 1 are eligible for a full refund of registration fees; cancellations received on or after March 1 are not eligible for refund.
