A full-day workshop offering a crash course on the essentials of opening a bookstore or buying an existing store will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016, just prior to the evening opening of Winter Institute 2016, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel in Denver, Colorado. “Introduction to Retail Bookselling,” a workshop for new and prospective booksellers, is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association and presented by Donna Paz Kaufman and Mark Kaufman of the Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates.

Workshop participants will gain an overview of the investment and payback involved in owning a bookstore, what makes for a great location, and critical aspects of a bookstore’s financial success.

Registration is open to ABA Provisional members and employees of Regular member stores and is limited to three booksellers per company. Space will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a nonrefundable workshop fee of $100, which includes lunch.

Current ABA members who are interested in attending the workshop can register here; non-members can join the association and then register for the workshop.

Attendance at the Winter Institute is not required in order to register for the workshop, although all workshop attendees are guaranteed a place at the institute. The Winter Institute 11 conference fee of $99 per person is in addition to the workshop fee.

To register for the Winter Institute, workshop registrants should send an e-mail to [email protected]; for hotel reservations, they should complete the hotel wait list form and enter “Introduction to Retail Bookselling” in the comment section.

Winter Institute 2016 is made possible by lead sponsor Ingram Content Group and the support of publishers large and small.
