Bookstores that participate in the Indie Next List Years of Discovery promotion will have the opportunity to register an additional bookseller for Winter Institute 12. To participate, stores must share an initial Indie Next List display photo along with the hashtag #INLJune on social media or feature the photo in an e-newsletter by June 30.

The Indie Next List Years of Discovery campaign was launched by the American Booksellers Association this month to celebrate more than a decade and a half of passionate handselling by ABA member booksellers that began in 1999 with the “Book Sense 76” and grew into the Indie Next List.

As part of the campaign, bookstores that create an INL display each month for June, July, August, and September and post a photo of each display to social media with the appropriate hashtag or feature the display in an e-newsletter will automatically be entitled to bring an additional bookseller to Winter Institute 2017 in Minneapolis. In addition, all participating stores will be entered into a drawing and 10 will be chosen to win a complimentary registration fee to Wi12 for one of their attendees.

Eligibility and entry requirements are as follows:

  • Displays must feature multiple titles from that month’s list and can include Indie Next List Great Reads, Now in Paperback titles, or Revisit & Rediscover backlist titles.
  • Stores will enter the contest by posting a photo of their display each month on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram with the hashtag for that month (#INLJune, #INLJuly, #INLAugust, or #INLSeptember). A hashtag must be included for the photo to be considered. Photos can also be shared in e-newsletters, which can be forwarded to ABA Social Media Manager Catherine Cusick for consideration.
  • The words “Indie Next” must appear in the posted copy or tweet.
  • Posting on more than one social media platform or in more than one newsletter each month will increase a store’s chances of being chosen for one complimentary registration fee.

Booksellers wanting to take part in this promotion must post their first photo on social media, along with the hashtag #INLJune, or feature a photo in an e-newsletter by June 30 to be in the running. Stores must also post photos for July, August, and September to earn the opportunity to register an additional bookseller for Wi12.

The Indie Next List Years of Discovery campaign rewards not just booksellers, but also consumers. An Indie Next List sweepstakes, launched in the June Indie Next List flier, will award the winner all 20 titles from that month’s list; separate contests will run in the July and August fliers. Booksellers are encouraged to display the INL flier prominently, use it as a bag stuffer, and distribute it at events so that customers will have a chance to win.

The Years of Discovery campaign kicked off in June with a refreshed Indie Next List flier that now allows booksellers to feature their store information on the front and includes three additional “Now in Paperback” titles, for a total of nine.

Questions about the display contest and social media entries should be addressed to ABA Social Media Manager Catherine Cusick. Questions about the INL Years of Discovery campaign should be addressed to Senior Program Officer Joy Dallanegra-Sanger or Development Officer Mark Nichols
