The workshop “How to Succeed at Retail Bookselling: Introduction to the Book Business,” on Tuesday, January 21, just prior to the opening of Winter Institute 2014 in Seattle, will provide new and prospective booksellers with an intensive overview of retail fundamentals and bookstore best practices that are essential to establishing a competitive business.

The workshop, sponsored by the American Booksellers Association and presented by the Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates, will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on January 21 at the institute’s host hotel, the Westin Seattle. Registration is open to ABA-member new and prospective booksellers only. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The nonrefundable workshop fee of $100 includes lunch and two coffee breaks.

Current ABA members can sign up for the one-day intensive workshop here; non-members can join the association and then register for the workshop. All workshop registrants are also eligible to attend the Winter Institute; this year’s conference fee is $79.99 per bookseller. Prospective booksellers who would like to attend the Winter Institute should contact ABA Education Manager Lisa Winn regarding registration and ABA Meetings and Planning Officer Jill Perlstein to be put on the hotel waiting list.

The Winter Institute, which kicks off with an opening reception at 7:00 p.m. on January 21 at The Elliott Bay Book Company, is made possible by support from lead sponsor Ingram Content Group and from publishers large and small. The opening reception is sponsored by Shelf Awareness.
