14 Existing Stores Bought by New Owners

The American Booksellers Association welcomed 45 indie bookstores that opened for business in 2013 in 20 states. Among them are six branches of existing businesses. California is home to 11 new stores; Michigan and New York, four; Pennsylvania and North Carolina, three; and Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, and Washington State, two.

In another sign of the vitality of independent bookselling, last year 14 established ABA member stores were bought by new owners.

In June, when Granada Books [6] kicked off its first day in business in downtown Santa Barbara, California, 600 people came to the opening day party, and there was a line spilling onto the sidewalk in front of the 3,000-square-foot bookshop. “To me, it was an indicator of how much people missed this community resource,” said co-owner Sharon Hoshida, who, with business partner Emmett McDonough, brought Granada Books to life. “We really envisioned this being a hub of a community,” Hoshida said. “What we wanted to do at this point in our lives is to bring the treasure back into being in a bookstore.”

In December, Christine Onorati, the owner of Brooklyn, New York’s WORD [7], opened a 2,400-square-foot branch store in a commercial building in bustling Jersey City, New Jersey. The new store is designed to accommodate small and intimate events, but can easily be opened up to fit 300 standing guests — all of whom will have clear sightlines to the stage. It also offers an expanded children’s section, a café, and inventory that Onorati didn’t have room for in her Brooklyn store, including art supplies and other sidelines. Of the new store, Onorati said, “It’s given me a new excitement for books.”

Stephanie Hochschild took over The Book Stall at Chestnut Court [8] in Winnetka, Illinois, in July after training under owner Roberta Rubin, who had run the store for 31 years. Hoschchild, who attended last month’s Winter Institute in Seattle, said the excitement and buzz of the three days of events confirmed for her “that the enthusiasm for the industry is so strong.” Back home in Winnetka, Hochschild’s family is relishing the bookstore adventure, and despite the abysmal weather this winter, she said that sales are remaining strong.
