In 2016, the American Booksellers Association welcomed 87 new indie bookstores that opened for business in 32 states and the District of Columbia, a 42.6 percent increase over the number of store openings in 2015. The new stores include a children’s bookstore, a romance bookstore, and 21 branches or satellites of existing businesses.

In addition, 15 established ABA member stores were bought by new owners.
