The longlist for the 2017 Man Booker International Prize [5] was announced on Wednesday, March 15. This year’s Man Booker “Dozen” of 13 novels was selected by a panel of five judges from a pool of 126 books in 11 different languages. The prize is awarded every year for a single book — either a novel or a short story — which is translated into English and published in the U.K.

The 2017 longlist for the prize, which is sponsored by Man Group, is as follows:

The Man Booker International Prize is awarded annually and celebrates the finest works of translated fiction from around the world. Last year’s winner was The Vegetarian by South Korean author Han Kang, translated by Deborah Smith and published in the U.K. by Portobello Books. This year’s list includes the winner of the first ever Man Booker International Prize in 2005, Ismail Kadare, along with three previous finalists and two authors with novels published in English for the first time.

The judging panel for the 2017 Man Booker International Prize, chaired by Nick Barley, director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, includes translator Daniel Hahn; award-winning poet Helen Mort; Turkish author and academic Elif Shafak; and Nigerian-born writer Chika Unigwe.

“Our longlist consists of books that are compulsively readable and ferociously intelligent,” said Barley. “In these times when walls are being built, this explosion of brilliant ideas from around the world arriving into the English language feels more important than ever.”

The 2017 shortlist will be announced on April 20; shortlisted authors and translators will receive £1,000 each. This year’s winning title, to be announced on June 14 at a formal dinner at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, will be awarded £50,000, to be divided equally between author and translator.
