At Morning Star Bookshop in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, you can start a good book in a cozy antique rocker and then purchase both to recreate the experience at home. Owner Rebekah Ray's two-and-a-half-month-old bookshop occupies a thousand square feet of a 2,500-square-foot space long occupied by Bridge Street Fine Arts & Antiques. Ray and Bridge Street owner Dale Martin cover for each other's shops since the proprietors employ no other staff, and Ray also runs a bed & breakfast, full time.

Lee Booksellers Serves Nebraska Communities for 25 Years

Lee Booksellers is the only locally owned, full-service independent bookstore in Lincoln, Nebraska. And this year the store's owners, Jim McKee and Linda Hillegass, celebrated 25 years in business and 26 years of marriage. Meeting its first major deadline, the new Highlands Ranch Town Center Tattered Cover store opened on Monday, November 15, exactly as was planned over a year ago. The grand opening will be held on November 20 and 21, complete with ribbon cutting, music, free coffee, Curious George, Peter Rabbit, and prizes. The grand prize is a $250 shopping spree at the new store.

Two Bookstores Find Expansion a Wise Decision

Two well-known bookstores on opposite ends of the country recently moved into larger spaces, and both have seen positive results reflected in both sales and customer satisfaction. In October, Chuck and Dee Robinson's Village Books in Bellingham, Washington, increased its size by a third. And in New York City, on November 4, Peter Glassman moved 24-year-old Books of Wonder two doors down, more than doubling sales-floor square footage and gaining room for a cafe and a larger events space.

Long Island Bookstore Resists Getting Malled

Southampton, New York, on the eastern end of Long Island, is a seaside town with a unique flair often associated with small villages where local, independent shops rule the roost. Part of its charm certainly lies in the fact that the town "has been spared a lot of superstore development," said Kathryn Szoka, co-owner of Canio's Books in Sag Harbor, one of the six incorporated villages of Southampton. Customers Testify SAFE(ly) at Ninth Street

On Thursday, October 21, Common Cause of Delaware, a nonprofit citizens lobbying organization dedicated to government reform and accountability, held a citizen's public meeting on the Safety and Freedom Ensured Act (S. 1709, SAFE Act) at Ninth Street Book Store in Wilmington, Delaware. The SAFE Act seeks to amend provisions of the USA Patriot Act, including Section 215, which gives law enforcement officials broad authority to demand that libraries or bookstores turn over books, records, papers, and documents.

WordsWorth to Close on Saturday

WordsWorth Books in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a Harvard Square institution, will be closing its doors for good this Saturday, October 30, after having failed to find an investor to help keep the bankrupt store afloat, as reported by the Boston Globe. The WordsWorth closing adds to the list of recent closures in Harvard Square -- which includes retailers Abercrombie & Fitch, Brine's Sporting Goods, Tweeter (an electronics store), and a Chili's restaurant.
