ABA will present the Human Resources Workshop, a new, in-depth education event covering essential aspects of HR for small businesses, in Portland, Oregon, and Providence, Rhode Island, this fall.

The Small Business Administration has created the online course “How to Prepare a Loan Package” to assist small business owners who are interested in borrowing money to start, grow, or expand their businesses.

The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates will present “Owning a Bookstore: The Business Essentials,” a workshop retreat, from Monday, August 24, to Friday, August 28, on Amelia Island, Florida. The program kicks off with an opening reception on Sunday evening,  August 23.

Booksellers, educators, and literacy advocates at April’s ABC Children’s Institute offered insights on what works best for inspiring children to want to read.

ABA member booksellers began Wednesday morning at BEA with visits to “Meet the Editor” at various publishers’ offices around New York City. “It was just an incredible, incredible session with some very high caliber editors,” said Matt Miller of Tattered Cover about his experience.

BookExpo America is presenting a wide array of educational programming and special events at next week’s industry-wide convention, including several sessions specifically developed with indie booksellers in mind.

At the Children’s Institute in Pasadena last month, booksellers and authors at the forefront of the We Need Diverse Books movement shared a host of strategies on how best to promote diverse messages and content through in-store displays, events, and hiring practices.

The PowerPoint presentation from the ABA spring Booksellers Forum education session “Exploring New Markets” is available to booksellers on BookWeb.org. The forums, which began March 11 in Omaha, Nebraska, concluded on April 29 in Boston, Massachusetts.

This week, approximately 190 booksellers converged in Pasadena for the 2015 ABC Children’s Institute. The packed schedule included education sessions on topics from birthday parties to story times, and presentations from authors such as Jeff Kinney, Marla Frazee, and Jewell Parker Rhodes.

To facilitate conversations that began during the Roundtable Discussions on POS Systems at Winter Institute 10, and to foster new discussions, six new booksellers-only online forums were recently added to BookWeb.org.

The last of ABA’s 10 spring Booksellers Forums of 2015 will be held on April 28 and 29 in Washington, D.C., and Cambridge, Massachusetts, respectively. The programs are free and open to ABA members and non-members alike.
