Baker & Taylor Announces Special Disney DVD Offer to Independent Bookstores

Baker & Taylor has teamed up with Disney and Buena Vista Home Entertainment to present to independent booksellers a promotional offer meant to make it easier for booksellers to market DVDs in their stores. The companies are offering bookstores a Disney DVD display rack featuring a selection of 16 Buena Vista Home Video titles. Bookstores that participate in the promotion will receive a $100 placement fee, 90-day payment terms, and a free merchandising display unit. The offer is limited to the first 500 customers.

Scholastic Announces Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Retailer Coupon Program

Scholastic today announced that it has redefined its policy regarding Scholastic Book Fair's pre-selling of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In a letter to booksellers, Michael Jacobs, Scholastic's senior vice-president, trade, said the new Retailer Coupon Program is intended to drive Scholastic Book Fair customers who pre-order the Order of the Phoenix to participating retailers.

Perseus Celebrates Its Former Independents

Booksellers should not be surprised if they sense a special rapport with their new Perseus Books Group sales reps. After all, four of the six reps in the new Perseus in-house sales force are former independent booksellers. "In these times of chains, online stores, and lost market share, we wanted to make sure that people knew [independent bookstores] are important to us," said John Hughes, vice president, associate publisher and marketing director of Perseus Books Group.

S'No Joke -- Century-Old Toy Fair Confronts the Elements

Barbie waited huddled by the Easy Bake Oven and even the Big Wheels needed four-wheel-drive when New York City was blanketed with close to two feet of snow in the middle of the 100th annual American International Toy Fair, held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the city's West Side from February 16 - 19. Retailers who attended on Sunday, the opening day of the show floor, and left promptly in the afternoon, were in luck. Others, who planned on visiting Monday or Tuesday, were faced with few, if any, transportation options.

FSG to Replace Its Commission Sales Reps

Last week, Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG) President and Publisher Jonathan Galassi announced that the company was dropping its commission sales rep network and that accounts visited by a commission rep would now be served by the Holtzbrinck Publishers Sales Group. The move affects titles published by both FSG and its distribution clients. The FSG in-house sales force will remain intact.
