Dear Booksellers,

Today, the team at ABA participated in a training with Cultures Connecting (CC) focused on antiracism and race relations. It was a challenging conversation that demonstrated to me how committed this group is to the work ahead. We’re listening and learning right now, and planning our next steps.

Cultures Connecting will also be conducting a training next week with the ABA Board.

Members who are interested in participating in a similar training can register for the free workshop for Children’s Institute attendees or contact CC directly for coaching and/or training by emailing ilsa.govan@culturesconnecting.com.

Some of the resources shared in today’s training included:

  • Antiracism Resources
  • Alliance of White-Antiracists Everywhere
  • Showing Up for Racial Justice
  • Trans Women of Color Collective
  • Talking About Race
  • NPR’s Code Switch
  • “Why People of Color Need Spaces Without White People”
  • Stay Woke: A Meditation Guide for the Rest of Us
  • Uprooting Racism: How White People Can Work for Racial Justice
  • Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism From the Inside Out

Today’s training will help inform the steps ABA is taking to move forward with initiatives in support of diversity, inclusivity, antiracism, BIPOC-owned bookstores, and BIPOC booksellers. Over the course of the last few weeks we have begun this work, and in tomorrow’s update we will share some of what we’ve been working on. We are committed to moving forward and making change happen.

ABA is here for all of you. Please reach out if there is anything we can help with.

Best,
Allison
