Dear Booksellers,

Many of you are facing a critical moment in this year. Some stores are looking at minimum wage increases next week that will impact payroll, others have upcoming deadlines to spend their PPP loans, and some are experiencing rollbacks of stay-at-home and shelter-in-place phases. Now is a good time to stop and take stock of your business. Tuesday’s Coffee Break at 3:00 p.m. ET will be “Finances During COVID” with ABA CFO PK Sindwani. ABA is also planning an upcoming session on preparing for the fall and 4th quarter. In the meantime, and following up on yesterday’s update about new thinking, here’s some weekend reading to support you and get us all thinking:

Antiracism

  • What it Means to be an Antiracist Company

  • Businesses Taking a Stand Against Racism

Supporting Yourself and Others

  • Re-entering the Workplace

  • Self Care and Mental Health Resources

  • Crisis Leadership

  • Burnout Recovery

Opportunities

  • Driving Sales: How can bookstores think about sales opportunities?

  • Tech Support: What retail tech services can help the new bookstore model?

  • Using Data: What data should bookstores be collecting and how? How should bookstores use the data?

Thinking About the Future

  • Post-COVID Return: What do businesses need to focus on to move forward?

  • Retail Experts on the Future: How are other retailers imagining and preparing for the future? What can bookstores learn from them?

  • Other Industries: What can bookstores learn from the disruption of the travel industry?

  • A Second Wave: What can bookstores learn from the food industry about how to prepare?

ABA is here for all of you. Please reach out if there is anything we can help with.

Best,
Allison
