Director of Education Wanted for Mission-Based Not-for-Profit located in White Plains, New York

ABA is looking for a Director of Education to support ABA’s current educational programming for independent booksellers and help reimagine the future of ABA’s educational programming, with the goals of delivering educational value to all of our members with different needs and different levels of experience in the most effective and accessible ways possible. This is a new position that reports directly to ABA’s COO.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating and managing ABA’s education strategy
  • Managing and directing ABA’s educational programming
  • Planning and overseeing educational programming for Winter Institute and Children’s Institute, ABA’s two annual in-person events
  • Supervising ABA’s education team
  • Optimizing the use of technology to support educational programming
  • Ensuring ABA’s education is accessible
  • Amplifying ABA’s commitment to antiracism, representation, equity, and access
  • Measuring the effectiveness of ABA’s educational programming
  • Assessing the needs for new education delivery methods and creating new education to meet those needs
  • Creating educational resources for members
  • Liasioning with other industry education providers

Requirements include:

  • Proven success developing and executing education programming for a company or organization (5+ years experience)
  • Proven success optimizing the use of technology to support educational programming
  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience/self-education
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solutions-oriented mindset
  • Strong project management skills and self-direction
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and handle tight deadlines and changing needs
  • Experience with creating and managing budgets
  • Experience creating revenue streams
  • Experience with virtual events

Preferred Skills or Experience:

  • Retail knowledge and/or experience
  • Hopin
  • Grant writing experience
  • Curriculum development experience


For over 100 years, ABA has helped independent bookstores grow and succeed. Independent bookstores promote reading, books, authors, and community. They contribute to their neighborhoods economically and culturally, support literacy, and provide access to ideas, education, and entertainment. As a national not-for-profit trade organization, ABA provides indie bookstores with education; business products and services; an e-commerce platform; marketing support; and advocacy to support their businesses.


This position is located at ABA’s home office in White Plains, New York. (This position is slated as an in-person position. Remote candidates may still apply but will only be considered if this requirement changes in the course of our search.)


$80K+ depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid sick days, holidays, vacation, and personal days.
