Independent Bookstore Day 2021 for IndieCommerce & IndieLite Stores

The Independent Bookstore Day feature for IndieCommerce and IndieLite will allow stores participating in Independent Bookstore Day this year to have the products listed on their site while also providing more control over the product pages themselves.

This all-in-one feature, called Indie Bookstore Day 2021:

  • Creates the IBD Product Class
  • Populates all of the IBD-exclusive items as products on that custom product class
  • Creates a page containing all of the products in a booklist
  • Has all available metadata, titles, images, prices, and descriptions.
  • Will not display an Add to Cart button until April 24th on all products, or the date the store specifies (more on this below).  Until then, they will display “Indie Bookstore Day exclusive products will be available to order on April 24th, 2021”.
  • Will allow stores to unpublish the products that they are not selling online and thus make them inaccessible for customers.

Once this feature is enabled (it was enabled for participating stores on 3/31/21 automatically), all of the above will be created and available for the store to promote right away!  All products are created as the Product Class titled ‘IBD Product’ and available under ‘Content’.  No one will be able to place an order for these products until the official date.

Please note: because the products and page are created automatically, they will appear as being created by an 'anonymous' user when this feature is enabled.

In addition, participating stores should already have placed orders with Ingram for the products they will be offering.  There is no Ingram fulfillment for these items from your IC/IL website.  All orders are to be filled with the stock available in-store.  For more information, please see the Independent Bookstore Day Bookseller Information Packet and Independent Bookstore Day website.

Below, we have videos demonstrating this feature on both IndieCommerce and IndieLite stores, along with written steps on how to make this most of this feature for your store.

IndieCommerce - IBD 2021

IndieLite - IBD 2021

Step 1: Verify Products are Available

When this feature has been enabled, all of the Independent Bookstore Day products will be listed on your IC or IL site.  To verify that these products are available, click ‘Content’, and then filter by ‘IBD Product’.  You should see the IBD products on your site, created as the ‘IBD Product’ type (product class).

You may want to click on a few products and see what it looks like.  Each product page has the:

  • Title
  • Cover image
  • Metadata
  • Price
  • The note ‘Indie Bookstore Day exclusive products will be available to order on April 24th, 2021.’  On April 24th, this will be replaced with the Add to Cart button.

Step 2: Not Selling a Particular Item?

In many cases, your store might not carry all of the IBD exclusive products.  For items that the store is not selling, you can simply unpublish the product page, which will make it unavailable to customers.  To unpublish the product page:

  1. Click ‘Content’ and find the product page of the item you aren’t selling
  2. Go to ‘Edit’
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where the additional settings live and click ‘Publishing options’ on the left
  4. Uncheck the box next to ‘Published’
  5. ‘Save’

This will unpublish the product page and not make it visible to customers or available for purchase on your website.  You may still carry the item at the store, if you are offering specific products, but this gives you the option to remove it from your website.

Step 3: Exclusive Page with Booklist

To make it easier and save stores time in creating promotional content, the IBD feature also comes with a pre-created page with a booklist of all IBD products.  To access this page, head to ‘Content’, filter by ‘Page’, and you should see one of the newest pages titled ‘Independent Bookstore Day 2021’.

The booklist contains all of the IBD exclusives by default as well. Just like any other piece of content, this can be edited as needed if you’d like to add text or images to the body!

Important note: if you previously unpublished an item, it may still appear on the booklist here when logged in as an Admin.  Please keep in mind that a customer will not be able to see the unpublished product on this list!

To upload an image to the body of the page:

When logged in as an admin and looking at the Independent Bookstore Day 2021 page, click ‘Edit’.

This will bring up the editing options for the piece of content.  In the WYSIWYG toolbar, click the Image button icon in the editing toolbar (7th icon in from right - top row).  We have more on uploading Images at our Help Center as well.

  1. Select ‘Browse Server’
  2. Select the file
  3. From the image list if it was previously uploaded
  4. Select ‘Upload’ in the ‘File Browser’ window
  5. Select ‘Browse’ or ‘Choose File’
  6. Locate the file on your local drive, select it, click ‘Open’
  7. Select ‘Upload’
  8. Double click the ‘File’
  9. Enter your ‘Image Properties’ as desired: to make it responsive, remove the width, height, and add alternative test for accessibility.
  10. Once you’ve made the changes you want, click ‘Save’ at the bottom of the page.

To Rearrange Titles on the List

You can edit the booklist and rearrange the products as well!  When on the IBD 2021 page, click ‘Edit’ and scroll down to the ‘Books’ section.

On the left hand side are square arrows with four points, which can be used to re-order the products.  Click on the arrow and drag the IBD products into the desired order and then ‘Save’ the changes at the bottom.

Step 4: Adding an Independent Bookstore Day Block

A block, linked to the IBD page on your site, is a great way to promote the event and drive customer traffic to the exclusive products your store is offering online.

Before getting started, make a note of the URL for the IBD 2021 page.  You may want to copy the URL or keep this page open in a separate tab so the URL is nearby for later use-it will be needed to create the link in the block!

Once you’re ready, navigate to Structure > Blocks > Add Block

  1. Block Title: This text will be as the header on your block. If you do not wish for a title to be displayed you may leave it blank on your published page.  You can also place <none> (including the brackets) in this field to keep it blank as well.
  2. Block Description: Required; this is used to describe your block on the ‘Blocks’ administration page. It should be clear and easy to identify its content.
  3. Body: Use the built-in WYSIWYG editor to add text, images, links, and any type of content you would like to create.  Here is where you can add a graphic or image of your choice!
  4. Select ‘Upload’ in the ‘File Browser’ window
  5. From the image list if it was previously uploaded
  6. In the editor, there is an icon that looks like a picture, click on it to open up a second window for image management:

    1. Select ‘Browse Server’ and then select the file
    2. Select ‘Browse’ or ‘Choose File’
    3. Locate the file on your local drive, select it, click ‘Open’, and then select ‘Upload’
    4. Double click the ‘File’, enter your ‘Image Properties’ as desired.  Please add alternative text for accessibility and remove the image width and height to keep it responsive.
    5. Lastly, click ‘Insert image’ to place the image in the body.
    6. Link tab - This block should link to the IBD 2021 page.URL - Enter a URL in this field to send visitors to the location when they click on the image.  As this will point to an internal page, you can use the relative path for the URL.  This can be found after the ‘.com’ part of the URL for the Independent Bookstore Page page specifically:  Example:
    7. Target - Select the link target from the options provided.
  7. Visibility Settings: There are a few ways in which you can adjust the visibility settings of a block:
  8. Pages: You can determine which pages a block appears on. In this case, you may want to limit this block to the front page.  To do this, select ‘Only the listed pages’ and enter <front> (including the brackets) into the text field at the bottom.
  9. Save Block: Once you have completed creating your block make sure to ‘Save’ it.

Blocks are disabled by default after being created.  From the list of all available blocks, head down to ‘Disabled’ to find the one you just created, and place it in a region that fits your theme.  This can be done either by the four-pointed arrow to the left or by the drop-down menu; be sure to save your changes using the button at the bottom of the page.

Step 5: Check Out The Changes As a Customer!

We always recommend double-checking any changes to the site as a customer.  When doing so, you should not be logged into the site; it’s best to log out of your account to verify the edits, additions, and other changes you’ve made to the IBD content on your site.

Display On-Hand Quantities Using Local Store Inventory (IndieCommerce Only)

IndieCommerce stores that want to display available quantities and control how many products are available to customers can do so adding the SKUs of the IBD products on the site to the store's LSI file along with the quantities.  More information on Local Store Inventory is available here.

When a product is no longer available, the product page can simply be unpublished, preventing customers from seeing the page or placing further orders for it.
