  • All That Followed, Gabriel Urza
    Henry Holt, 9781627792431, August 4, 2015 (Fiction)

Urza's novel unfolds slowly, moving backward, as it reveals its characters' histories and their interconnectedness in the wake of a moment of violence. Even better, it offers a window into contemporary Basque culture, pressed between the Spanish state and an ethnic pride that can be manifested in violence, even when it's what no one wants. Atmospheric and unhurried, this is a small-town story with international resonance.

ALL THAT FOLLOWED sheds some much-needed light on a region with an incredibly rich cultural history and a painful, tormented political past. The story is told in short chapters from three different perspectives: Joni, an American who fell in love with a Basque woman and has lived in Muriga since the 1940s; Mariana, a young woman whose husband belonged to the wrong political party and was kidnapped and murdered; and Iker, the young man who is in jail for that crime. At the heart of it all is Muriga, a small, Basque town like any other small town, filled with gossip and unspoken accusations.

Urza's writing is wonderful, allowing you to sink into these characters. The nuance is impressive for a debut novelist, and I'm glad someone is writing about a place we often forget unless it's on the news because of something horrible that has happened.
