  • Trouble is a Friend of Mine, Stephanie Tromly
Kathy Dawson, 9780525428404, August 4, 2015 (Young Adult)

Like a love child of Veronica Mars and John Hughes, TROUBLE IS A FRIEND OF MINE is a madcap mystery, a fresh coming-of-age and unlikely friendship story in one! After a divorce and ensuing custody battle finds Zoe reluctantly starting her junior year in upstate New York, oddball and outcast Phillip Digby appears on her doorstep and drags Zoe into his search for a missing teenage girl. With fresh, infectious characters and a thrillingly zany plot, this debut is a treat from start to finish!

What a crazy ride! Zoe and Digby are a fabulous team and their voices just crackle with authenticity. They are funny, smart, and very contemporary. I couldn't get enough and found myself reading as manically as Digby was plotting! I sincerely hope we will get more of their story!

Laura Donohoe, Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe (Asheville, NC)

When Digby shows up on her front porch, Zoe knows he is trouble, but she cannot seem to say no to him. When she realizes that his family situation is worse than hers, well, the mystery gets personal. Tromly has written a mystery/adventure with quirky characters who do not like each other. It feels like  the opposite of romance, but still they are clicking in some weird ways. This is what a YA book should be -- smart, funny, and surprising. A terrific read!
