The American Booksellers Association has announced the establishment of the Avin Mark Domnitz Scholarship to the Fifth Annual Winter Institute to honor the former ABA CEO's wide-ranging contributions to independent bookselling. As a tribute to Domnitz's work with the ABACUS Survey, the scholarship is open to the owners and regular employees of bookstores that have submitted their 2008 financial data -- via a completely secure and confidential electronic form -- to the ABACUS survey before the August 15 deadline.

"It is a great honor to have my name associated with a scholarship to the premier industry educational event of the year," said Domnitz. "It is even more important to have that scholarship tied to a participant in the ABACUS study. There is an absolute link between participation in ABACUS and increased profitability -- the linchpin of survival in our amazingly competitive marketplace."

The scholarship covers attendance at the Winter Institute, aka WiFi(ve), to be held in San Jose, California, from February 3 - 5, 2010, travel expenses up to $350, and up to a four- night stay at the host hotel, the Doubletree San Jose. To apply, booksellers at stores that have submitted their data to ABACUS should send an e-mail with "Domnitz Scholarship" in the subject line to ABA Education Coordinator Lisa Winn at [email protected]; the e-mail should include the applicant's name, staff title, store name, and store contact information.

The scholarship application process is currently open and will close on August 15. The winner will be announced in Bookselling This Week on October 1. (Read more about ABACUS.)
