This month closes with the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association (SCIBA) trade show on September 27 – 28 at The Omni Hotel, Los Angeles, California Plaza, and the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association (NAIBA) trade show from September 30 – October 2 at the Somerset Doubletree in Somerset, New Jersey.

At both the SCIBA and NAIBA shows, members of the ABA staff will present –– in conjunction with the Small Business Majority –– the education session “Health Care Reform and the Bookstore: How It Affects You Now.” This session will provide booksellers with detailed and actionable information about the Affordable Care Act specifically tailored to the states in their regions.

Congress’ passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 has resulted in an individual mandate that requires everyone to have health insurance or to pay a penalty. ABA’s presentation at SCIBA and NAIBA will focus on what the law means for small businesses and their employees, how bookstore owners can evaluate their options, and how to take advantage of provisions of the law already in place.

At the SCIBA show, ABA CEO Oren Teicher and a representative from the Small Business Majority will present “Health Care Reform and the Bookstore” from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27. ABA Board member John Evans of DIESEL, A Bookstore, with four locations in California, and Nathan Halter, ABA’s member relationship manager for the SCIBA region, will also be at the show.

At NAIBA, “Health Care Reform and the Bookstore” will be presented on Wednesday, October 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. by Senior Program Officer Joy Dallanegra-Sanger and the Small Business Majority. Also attending the show will be ABA Board member Jonathon Welch of Talking Leaves Books in Buffalo, New York; Kobo Account Manager Dave Morris; and Catherine Cusick, ABA’s member relationship manager for the NAIBA region.

ABA staff will be on the exhibit floor (Table 29 at SCIBA and Tables 33 – 34 at NAIBA) to talk to booksellers about member services and upcoming educational events, including Winter Institute 2014. Booksellers are also encouraged to come with their questions and concerns.  ABA members can drop off their business cards at the booth for an extra chance to win a scholarship to either the Winter Institute or next April’s Children’s Institute, and non-member booksellers will have the opportunity to sign up for a free trial membership.
