This week, ABA announced that it has added a new session, "2003 ABACUS Results Review," to its programming at this year's BookExpo America (BEA). The ABACUS seminar will be held on Sunday, June 6, from 9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. in Room 402A at Chicago's McCormick Place Convention Center.

ABA CEO Avin Mark Domnitz will lead the session, which will look at Year 2 of the newly constituted financial survey of independent bookstores and will compare these figures against the 2002 study. With the collection of the 2003 data complete, ABA will now begin the process of developing a trend analysis.

"The further development of ABACUS as a standard against which a bookseller can measure their business's financial performance is an invaluable tool," said Domnitz. "Now, the ability to view trends within one's own business compared to industry trends makes the study even more useful. As expected, the development of ABACUS is pointing a clear path to the creation of meaningful education programs, which will assist in a company's move to greater profitability. The presentation of the '2% Solution' seminar is one such example."

The "2% Solution," also moderated by Domnitz, will be held on Saturday, June 5, from 10:00 a.m. - noon in Room 402A/B. The seminar will look at the drivers of profitability and examine how they can be worked on to move booksellers' businesses to profitability.
