Banning books silences stories

Indie booksellers that ordered a Banned Books Week promotion kit from the American Booksellers Association will receive their kits in the August Red Box, on its way to stores now.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read that brings together the entire book community, including booksellers, librarians, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers. This year, the celebration will be held September 23–29. The theme of Banned Books Week 2018, “Banning Books Silences Stories,” serves as a reminder that everyone needs to speak out against the tide of censorship.

ABA’s Banned Books Week kits, which include bookmarks, stickers, counter cards, caution tape, and more, are aimed at helping bookstores and their communities celebrate banned books and free expression.

Bookstores that plan to put up a Banned Books Week display or host other Banned Books Week programming are encouraged to register their events on the Banned Books Week Coalition’s Upcoming Events map. The Banned Books Week Coalition is also providing promotional tools, such as social media graphics, infographics, web banners, and downloadable posters and shelf-talkers, to help booksellers promote Banned Books Week.
