The Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation kicked off its “Writing the Next Chapter” year-end fundraising campaign on “Giving Tuesday,” December 1, with the goal of raising $10,000 by the end of the month. Through December 15, the Binc Board of Directors has offered to match all donations up to $3,500.

The year-end fundraiser is part of the Binc Foundation’s overall efforts to become a sustainable entity that can continue to provide emergency financial assistance to booksellers and their families in times of personal crisis. The Binc Foundation’s Campaign to Sustain, which launched in May 2015, has already succeeded in increasing the number of monthly donors.

“We have made good progress on our fundraising goals, but still have a ways to go to become sustainable,” said Binc Executive Director Pam French. “We are working to connect with publishers, bookstores, and individuals throughout the industry as potential supporters. Every donation helps ensure the foundation is able to continue helping booksellers.”

In 2015, Binc was able to provide financial assistance to 27 bookstore employees and their families, and over the summer the foundation awarded 53 higher education scholarships for students from 29 states representing 35 different bookstores. The foundation also awarded professional development scholarships to help 12 booksellers attend the American Booksellers Association’s Winter Institute and Children’s Institute and the regional association trade shows.
