The details of California Bookstore Day were officially announced to the media on Tuesday in a press release highlighting the inaugural celebration of the vitality and diversity of independent bookstores on May 3, 2014.

Nearly 100 bookstores have signed up to participate on California Bookstore Day and each will be hosting its own celebration, with many featuring author readings, in-store events, giveaways, and 13 limited-edition book-inspired items

Promising indie bookstore festivities “from Eureka to San Diego,” California Bookstore Day highlighted the merchandise that has been specially created for the event by authors including Neil Gaiman, George Saunders, Don DeLillo, Lemony Snicket, Michael Pollan, and Lisa Brown. CBD also noted author events and readings that will be held at stores throughout the state, featuring authors Dave Eggers, Lisa Brown, Isabel Allende, Michael Pollan, Wendy McNaughton, and others.

Authors participating in California Bookstore Day are gearing up for the May 3 event. Author Michael Pollan said of celebration, “Like many authors whose work isn’t easily slotted into a tried and true commercial category, I feel a large debt of gratitude to the independent booksellers of California — people who actually read the first, quirky books of a new writer and then convince their customers to give those books a try.”
