All 2017 Children’s Institute (Ci5) attendees are invited to mix and mingle with their bookselling colleagues at the Welcome Reception and Backlist Book Swap Party, which kicks off the institute at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at Powell’s City of Books in downtown Portland, Oregon.

Attendees are asked to let the American Booksellers Association know ahead of time what children’s, middle grade, or young adult book they’ll be bringing to swap. Following the institute, ABA will supply a full list of the books shared at the Backlist Book Swap, along with information about the person who brought each title.

Titles selected for the Backlist Book Swap should be at least five years old and still be in print. The giver should also include a bookmark with their contact information, so the person who picks up the book knows who recommended it.

Ci5 attendees who are planning to participate in the swap are asked to fill out the form now with details about the book they will be bringing. Those who are planning to purchase a book for the swap during the April 5 Portland-area Bookstore Tours or at Powell’s Books prior to the reception can also fill out the form now or once their book is purchased.

Booksellers who already have their book swap pick are reminded to pack it for their trip to Portland, as well as to bring it to Powell’s for the Welcome Reception and Backlist Book Swap Party or on the Bookstore Tours if attending, as the final tour stop will be Powell’s.

ABA staff will be on site to scan in and log last-minute submissions, but participants are asked to bring a business card (in addition to a bookmark) so their contact information can be logged as well.

Previous Backlist Book Swap events have generated robust lists of hundreds of backlist favorites. Booksellers can browse lists from the Backlist Book Swaps at the 2016 Winter Institute, the 2016 Children’s Institute, and the 2017 Winter Institute.

See the full Children’s Institute program here. Ci5 is made possible by the support of lead sponsor Baker & Taylor with additional support from publisher sponsors large and small.
