“Counterspeak” Podcast Celebrates First Anniversary
- By Molly Bond
Counterspeak, the monthly podcast of the American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE), is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month. The podcast, co-hosted by the American Booksellers Association’s Director of ABFE, Advocacy, and Public Policy David Grogan and ABA Content Director Sydney Jarrard, addresses relevant free expression issues and features interviews with notable First Amendment experts.
In Counterspeak’s debut episode last December, Jarrard spoke with Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU and author of HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech, Not Censorship (Oxford University Press).
Subsequent installments have featured interviews with Chris Finan of the National Coalition Against Censorship; Jonathan Hamilt of Drag Queen Story Hour; Deputy General Counsel of The New York Times David E. McCraw, author of Truth in Our Times: Inside the Fight for Press Freedom in the Age of Alternative Facts (All Points Books); Columbia University President and First Amendment legal scholar Lee Bollinger, author of The Free Speech Century (Oxford University Press); and Denise Chavez of Casa Camino Real Book Store & Art Gallery.
The most recent episode featured a discussion with David Kirby, author of When They Come for You: How Police and Government Are Trampling Our Liberties — and How to Take Them Back (St. Martin’s Press), about the current status of free speech in America.
Throughout December, follow along with Counterspeak on Twitter for a look back at past episodes.
