Independent Bookstore Day logoThis year’s Independent Bookstore Day ambassador is Emma Straub, a former bookseller and the bestselling author of Modern Lovers, The Vacationers, and Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures, as well as the short story collection Other People We Married (all Riverhead Books). To promote Independent Bookstore Day, Straub will be speaking to the media about the importance of indie booksellers.

Straub previously worked at BookCourt in Brooklyn, New York. When the news of its closing came in December, Straub made her own announcement that she would be opening a new bookstore, Books are Magic, in Brooklyn with her husband, Michael Fusco-Straub.

Booksellers planning to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day have until February 1 to order exclusive, literary-themed merchandise and giveaways to showcase on April 29. Among the many items in the 2017 IBD catalog, booksellers will find a Welcome to Night Vale vinyl record, a new set of literary tea towels, and a signed print featuring artwork from A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston (Candlewick).

Stores must be members of their regional independent booksellers association and order a minimum of 15 total pieces from the catalog in order to participate in Independent Bookstore Day. Items will ship April 15.

Visit the Independent Bookstore Day website to learn more about the event; the “For the Trade” section includes a handy month-by-month planning guide as well as FAQs.
