Booksellers, friends, family, and colleagues are coming together to support Scott Meyer, the owner of Merritt Bookstore in Millbrook, New York, as he undergoes treatments for cancer. Through the GiveForward fundraiser Book Lovers for Scott, contributions are being collected to help with the growing medical bills, living expenses, and college costs that Meyer and his family are experiencing.

Meyer went through three successful surgeries to treat melanoma, but his cancer recently metastasized to his brain, which has led to an additional two surgeries. He now heads to radiation treatment. “As you can imagine, even with health care coverage, the co-payments and uncovered portions of medical bills add up rapidly,” organizers wrote on the fundraiser’s webpage.

At Merritt Books, Meyer is known as “the Tasmanian devil of booksellers” for his unwavering devotion to supporting authors large and small while also promoting upcoming titles on local radio shows and in publications. Through the bookstore, Meyer also sponsors and sells at book fairs and coordinates literary festivals in Millbrook. “There are few better friends to authors and book lovers than Scott Meyer,” the fundraising page notes.

Donations are being accepted through GiveForward and organizers have asked that the story of Meyer and his current battle be shared with others, via social media or otherwise. For more information, visit Book Lovers for Scott.
