Starting in June, Book Sense and the History Channel will launch a monthly in-store promotion called Hardcover History, meant to entice readers to experience history through exceptional books and extraordinary television. Each month, History Channel programs will be paired with complementary reading suggestions, which Book Sense stores can then market in their bookstore with the help of display materials -- such as promotional bookmarks -- provided by Book Sense.

"Hardcover History is a unique way to help readers and viewers learn why history matters," said Meg Smith, associate director for Book Sense Marketing. "We will pair great programming and great reading, and inform customers about both. We hope customers will return each month to the store, to learn about that month's great Hardcover History combo."

Materials, including a Hardcover History promotional easel and bookmarks, will be sent to stores with Book Sense in the May white box. The Hardcover History promotion will begin in June.

To kick off the campaign, Book Sense will present an advance screening of a History Channel documentary based on the first book spotlighted in the Hardcover History promotion, Blood From a Stone: The Quest for the Life Diamonds by Yaron Svoray and Richard Hammer (Forge). The screening will occur at this year's BookExpo America on May 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the theater at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Author Svoray will introduce the documentary.

Booksellers who wish to attend should RSVP as soon as possible to Meg Smith at [email protected]. All e-mails must include in the subject heading the phrase "BEA Screening." Since the L.A. Convention Center theater has a capacity of only 300, the screening is limited to those who RSVP first and to two people per bookstore. Refreshments will be served. Please specify in your e-mail response how many people will be coming, your name, and the name of your store.

The History Channel documentary based on Blood From a Stone will air Monday, June 9, at 9:00 p.m. EST/8:00 p.m. CST.
