Pre-Institute programming, scheduled for Friday, January 27, prior to the Wi12 opening reception, includes:

  • Two full-day and two half-day Bookstore/Publisher Tours, open to booksellers and international guests. Reservations are required; the cost per person is $35 for the full-day tours and $25 for the half-day tours. Space is limited and is expected to sell out.

All tours will start and end at the Wi12 host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. The full-day tours will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; half-day tours will run from 11:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The selection and order of the tour stops will vary.

  • The IndieCommerce Institute (ICI), a full-day, interactive learning experience for IndieCommerce stores. This classroom-style workshop, to be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, will present actionable information for both new and experienced website administrators.

Registration is required and limited to two booksellers per ABA member store. The ICI conference fee is $125 per person; attendance at the Winter Institute is not required to register for the IndieCommerce Institute.

  • The Leadership Workshop, a full-day program for owners and managers. The Kansas Leadership Council team, which presented a session on leadership at Wi11 and facilitated the event’s first-time debrief, will introduce principles and competencies for developing leadership skills in owners and managers, which they in turn can pass on to their employees.

Registration for the program, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is required and limited to two booksellers per ABA member store; the cost is $125 per person.

During the Winter Institute’s three full-days of educational programming, ABA will also offer two Advanced Education Sessions and a six-hour Bookstore Finance Seminar.

  • The Bookstore Finance Seminar is a 101-level program for anyone seeking a better understanding of the fundamentals of budgeting, cash flow analysis, business financing, bookkeeping, and financial statements.

This seminar is free but space is limited. Registration is open to two booksellers per ABA member store.

The seminar will be presented by Robert Sindelar, managing partner of Third Place Books in Seattle, Washington, and ABA Chief Financial Officer Robyn DesHotel on Saturday, January 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m.

  • Two Advanced Education Sessions for store owners and managers. “Understanding and Fostering Your Store Culture” and “Managing Managers” are advanced learning sessions aimed at the exchange of ideas among peers.

Registration for each Advanced Education Session is required and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. One bookseller per ABA member store may register for each session.

“Understanding and Fostering Your Store Culture” will be presented by STYLED RETAIL, a strategic retail consultancy with more than 50 years of collective experience, on Sunday, January 29, from 9:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. in Room Lakeshore B of the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.

“Managing Managers” will be facilitated by Lani Basa, owner and CEO of The Business Women’s Circle (BWC), a group providing a confidential and collaborative setting for businesswomen to foster growth and work on their businesses with the support of others. This session will take place on Sunday, January 29, from 3:50 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Room Greenway D/E.
