Throughout the fall, the American Booksellers Association’s member stores can take advantage of specials on a wide array of frontlist and backlist titles from publishers that are showing their support for the fourth annual celebration of Indies First on Small Business Saturday, this year November 26.
Ordering opens on Saturday, October 1, on more than a dozen special publisher offers, and additional offers will become available throughout October and November.
For the first time, three university presses are offering specials on titles in celebration of Indies First as well as University Press Week 2016, which takes place November 14–19. One of this year’s themes for University Press Week is community — from the community of a discipline to a regional home and culture, and from the shared discourse of a campus to a bookstore’s community of readers.
Promotional codes for the special offers, including those from the newly added university presses, are available on BookWeb (a username and password are required to log in). A downloadable Excel spreadsheet listing the publisher offers is also available.
Stores that will be hosting authors on Small Business Saturday are encouraged to check the specials to see if they include titles that their guest booksellers will be hand-selling during their visits.
In a September 14 letter, Lena Dunham, this year’s Indies First spokesperson, called on her fellow authors to show their support for indie bookstores by serving as honorary booksellers for the day and by linking from their own websites to their local independents (or IndieBound.org) for book sales.
Complete details and resources for booksellers and authors wishing to take part in this year’s Indies First celebrations are available on BookWeb.
Booksellers should also be on the lookout for the October Red Box mailing, which includes Indies First balloons, bookmarks, and tote bags for promoting the event. Digital Indies First logos and poster designs can be found in BookWeb’s Designs and Downloads.
