Rita Maggio, a retired public school principal, is opening BookTowne, a general bookstore in Manasquan, New Jersey, this May. Her 900-square-foot store will occupy the space that was previously home to Landmark Books. When Maggio learned that the owner of Landmark Books was relocating, she acted quickly and secured a lease, which begins today, March 1.

Manasquan, a seaside town on the Atlantic Ocean, is a very popular vacation spot, with a population that doubles in the summer from 6,000 to 12,000. However, Maggio explained, the town's residents enjoy cultural events, fine dining, and shopping year-round. "The store is located adjacent to the Algonquin Arts Theatre, which has plays, movies, and art classes," she said, noting that the back entrance of the bookstore is connected to the theatre by a path. The store's front entrance is on "a lovely Main Street with great restaurants and shopping, all catering to children and families," she added.

To create an inviting ambiance, Maggio is replacing all the fixtures and giving the place "a new look." With fresh paint and refinished floors provided by the landlord, Maggio sees the space progressing according to plan.

BookTowne will specialize in mysteries and children's books. Based on her own interests, Maggio plans to develop a strong section on politics and current events. The store will feature nature guides and other books of interest to a shore community -- travel, gardening, home decor -- along with the requisite beach reading for vacationers.

Having attended a Paz Booksellers School, Maggio feels well prepared for her new career. "I've also spoken extensively to experienced booksellers," she told BTW. "Everyone has been incredibly helpful and generous with time and ideas." She singled out Margot Sage-EL, owner of Watchung Booksellers, who provided much information and the offer of an internship at her store, during the holiday season. "[Working at Watchung] was a great experience," Maggio recalled. "I learned so much about the process and I could run my many questions by Margot."

Maggio hopes to be ready to open in May, as the tourist season begins, but she acknowledges that problems may arise to delay the opening. She said, "When I told Margot that I'd like the store's grand opening to be Memorial Day Weekend, her answer was 'You have to!'" --Nomi Schwartz
