Booksellers in the Great Lakes, Mountains & Plains, and Northern California regions will be gathering next week for fall regional trade shows featuring extensive educational programming and a number of special author events.

ABA will be providing educational sessions at each of the shows, as well as ongoing demonstrations of the new Book Sense Gift Card Program at the ABA/Book Sense booth on the trade show floors.

Booksellers who participate in a gift card demo at the shows will be automatically entered into a raffle to win a free $50 gift card training session and a color inkjet printer. For a second chance at winning, booksellers should bring a recent photo of a Book Sense 76 display to the booth.

ABA sessions at the shows include:

"Technology as a Bookselling Tool," presenting information about the new electronic Book Sense Gift Card Program; Nielsen BookScan, the most advanced and efficient way to report sales to the Book Sense Bestseller Lists; ABA's various online resources; and other new technologies for booksellers;

"ABACUS: Year One," presenting rich data from the ABACUS study that shows the financial performance of almost 200 participating stores, as well as "data slices" grouped by profitability levels, sales levels, area of the country, and much more. Close attention will be paid to those drivers of success that are so clearly revealed by the study's results;

"Economic Impact of Locally Owned Businesses," presenting the results of a recent report that provides rigorous analysis comparing local merchants and national chains and that quantifies their respective local economic impacts. The report is the work of Civic Economics, an economic analysis and strategic planning consulting firm, and was commissioned by Liveable City of Austin, Texas, The Austin Independent Business Alliance, BookPeople, and Waterloo Records;

"BookSense.com Co-op Reimbursement Program," explaining how booksellers can earn newsletter co-op dollars by featuring participating publishers' titles, both online and in stores. Attendees will also learn about an easy way to offset the cost of maintaining their Web sites.

The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression is also sponsoring a panel "From Monica to the Patriot Act: Customer Privacy Today," which will address customer privacy as one of the most important First Amendment issues to confront booksellers. Additionally, the program will include one of the first screenings of a dramatic documentary about the Tattered Cover case, Reading Your Rights, which is appearing on PBS stations around the country this fall.
