{pages} a bookstore seeks an enthusiastic, organized, responsible, creative, dynamic leader, and multi-tasker to manage a talented team of booksellers. This is a chance to be part of a thriving independent bookstore located in the heart of downtown Manhattan Beach, one block from the Pacific Ocean. {pages} has been in operation for twelve years, is open seven days a week and utilizes IndieCommerce for our robust online business.

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the owners, manage the day-to-day operation of the bookstore. The store manager is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the store and delivery of excellent customer service to everyone we serve. Responsibilities include oversight of staff, scheduling, inventory management, maintenance of store appearance, and assistance with events.  

Position requires:

  • A great attitude and ability to work well with others
  • Passion for books and customer service
  • A team leader who can manage staff and delegate tasks accordingly
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and exercise excellent judgment
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities
  • Must work some evenings and weekends
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word, Outlook, and Google Docs a must
  • Retail bookselling experience a must
  • Knowledge of Anthology Point of Sales (POS) system or other bookstore POS system, a strong plus
  • Management experience, a strong plus

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise personnel, which includes providing performance evaluations, training, scheduling, work allocation, and problem resolution and maintaining a positive, productive, inclusive, and enjoyable working environment.
  • Work with the receiver to manage inventory including books and sidelines, oversight of special orders, receiving, shipping, and return of overstocked or defective merchandise, calculating turns, managing out-of-stocks and coordination of annual inventory utilizing the store POS
  • Supervise and assist with events both in-store and offsite
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of bookstore budgets, operating policies and procedures.
  • Manage the processing of online orders.
  • Oversee overall appearance of the store including in-store and window displays and store cleanliness.
  • Train new staff members on store procedures and policies and the POS system.
  • Help maintain and grow social media presence including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.
