Position: Part-Time Experienced Bookseller
Part-time (20 – 30 hours per week.)
Evening and weekend availability required.
Compensation: hourly rate commensurate with experience and market

{pages} is an independent full-service bookstore located in downtown Manhattan Beach, California. 

We are seeking an enthusiastic booklover for part time employment as a customer facing bookseller. {pages} is open for browsing (with COVID safety protocols and a customer capacity limit) daily. General work experience and familiarity with current publishing/bookselling world strongly preferred.

The job requires excellent customer service skills, love and knowledge of books, and the ability to perform physically and mentally taxing tasks and careful attention to detail.

Duties will include but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting customers with book selections 
  • Operating cash registers, answering phones and emails
  • Shelving books accurately
  • Regularly write book reviews for website, shelf talkers, Indie Next and publishers
  • Assist with hosting events both in-store and offsite
  • Availability evenings and weekends
  • Opening and closing tasks
  • Help maintain a clean and attractive retail environment
  • Carrying and unpacking boxes (as much as 40 lbs)

To excel in this position aspiring booksellers must have an enthusiastic love for books and ideas, the ability to multitask, an impeccable eye for detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, curiosity, a willingness to learn our systems, a positive attitude and ability to collaborate with teammates, and they must be punctual and dependable.

Skills/experience that are a plus:

  • Retail bookstore experience (+++)
  • Experience with Anthology or other bookselling point of sale system
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, ipage and Edelweiss
  • Retail and customer service experience

{pages} a bookstore is the place for book lovers of all ages, where reading, meeting and discussing books is a way of life. We offer a carefully curated selection of new fiction, non-fiction, children’s, cooking, surf, coffee table books and bestsellers. We are proud of our knowledgeable and caring staff who can match any reader with the perfect book. We are an active member of our community. 

Prior to COVID, {pages} regularly hosted in store author events and book signings, weekly story times, and four monthly book clubs. Those activities have pivoted to virtual but we plan to reinstate in person events and gatherings when it is safe to do so.
