Children and Teen Bookseller at Politics and Prose Bookstore

Position Summary:

Seeking a full-time bookseller, including weekend and evening shifts, for the Children and Teens Department.

Duties include customer service in person, by email and over the phone, shelving, taking daily inventory, creating school orders, making table displays, and maintaining and organizing assigned sections. Staff are expected to read a variety of children’s and teens’ backlist and frontlist titles to maintain knowledge of department inventory, regularly write book reviews for the website and department newsletters, and host author events.

Other responsibilities may include editorial tasks, coordinating Children and Teens book-a-month program, Children and Teens signed first editions club, and book fairs/partnership Fridays. The bookseller also may be enlisted to order sidelines, design window displays, present book talks for teachers, librarians, and students.

Skills/Experience/Requirements:

  • Good with people

  • Strong writing skills
  • Retail/customer service experience preferred
  • Public speaking experience a plus
  • Experience with children and/or teens a plus

Sidelines Associate at Politics and Prose Bookstore

Politics and Prose needs a full-time (40 hours-per-week) sidelines associate. This position will split time between all locations: three days at Connecticut Avenue and two days between the Union Market and the Wharf. Working one weekend day is also required. In addition, at least one year of experience in bookstore retail or a related area, with a background in merchandise displays a plus. This position reports to the Sidelines Buyer and the Branch Stores Director.   

An ideal sidelines associate pays great attention to detail, cares for the organization and accuracy of inventory, and understands customer interests and needs. 

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Receiving and labeling merchandise 
  • Restocking the floor and keeping items on display neat and clean 
  • Placing reorders for and transferring items to the Union Market and Wharf locations 
  • Providing customer service and floor support when needed 
  • Maintaining and organizing back room overstock

Branch Bookseller at Politics and Prose Bookstore

Politics and Prose needs a full-time (40 hours per week) Branch Bookseller at its branch at The Wharf in southwest Washington, D.C.  

The job requires excellent customer service skills, extensive knowledge of books, and the ability to perform physically and mentally taxing tasks. Experience in retail is strongly preferred.  Bookselling experience is even better. Booksellers have regular schedules that include working some nights and at least one weekend shift. 

Duties will include but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting customers with book selections 
  • Operating cash registers, answering phones 
  • Carrying and unpacking boxes
  • Shelving books, assisting with events
  • Receiving book orders
  • Designing and maintaining displays   

To do well in this position aspiring booksellers must have an abiding love for books and ideas, the ability to multitask, an impeccable eye for detail, fantastic written and verbal communication skills, curiosity and a willingness to learn our systems, a cooperative spirit and goal-oriented attitude, and of course they must be punctual and dependable.

Part-Time Supported Events Booksellers at Politics and Prose Bookstore

The Politics and Prose Supported Events department is busy throughout much of the year with hundreds of offsite event book sales at house parties, think tanks, clubs, embassies, conferences, literary festivals, and the like. These events can range in size from a few dozen people to many thousands and feature a wide variety of fascinating books and author talks.  We rely on a team of part-time booksellers to staff these events. 

Availability: 

  • Supported Events Bookseller positions are part-time.  They staff events occurring days, nights, and weekends, and generally lasting 3-5 hours. Booksellers are responsible only for the events they sign up for.  The flexibility in assignments is ideal for someone who has work, school, volunteer, or family responsibilities.  
  • Supported Event booksellers are expected to work twenty-five events per year. 

Skills and Requirements: 

  • Booksellers must be able to stay calm under pressure, think on their feet, and feel comfortable going into new places, often alone.  Above all, Supported Events Booksellers must provide top notch customer service while serving as ambassadors of the Politics and Prose brand in the greater Washington community.   
  • This position is physically demanding.  Supported Events Booksellers must be able to repeatedly lift 20-30 pound boxes and must be able to stand on their feet for long periods of time.   
  • Supported Event Booksellers must be comfortable with handling cash.  They must be able to work with Politics and Prose’s point of sale system and also tablet-based technology like Square. Supported Event booksellers manage all onsite sales transactions and post-event reconciliations. 
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license and the willingness to drive a store car.
  • Supported Events Booksellers play an important role at certain large events at Politics and Prose.  They will be called upon at times to provide bookselling support at other large-venue events that Politics and Prose hosts.
