Here’s what’s happening in the world of indie bookstores this week:
Last month, Ada’s Technical Books & Café [6] in Seattle, Washington, announced the soft opening of Ada’s Discovery Café [7] at the Lounge by AT&T at 425 15th Avenue East. A grand opening [8]featuring coffee brewed by robots and a raffle is scheduled for October 25.
New York-based Shakespeare & Co. [9] has opened a branch location in Philadelphia [10], Pennsylvania.
Run for Cover Bookstore and Café [11] in San Diego, California, held its grand opening [12] on Friday, October 5, with approximately 300 people in attendance.
Kew & Willow Books [13] in Queens, New York, celebrated one year in business [14] with in-store discounts, giveaways, and cupcakes on October 6.
The expansion [15] of Carmichael’s Bookstore [16]’s Bardstown Road location in Louisville, Kentucky, is now complete.
Copperfish Books [17] earned first place in the Charlotte Sun’s Best of Charlotte Readers’ Choice Awards, as well as second place in the Cards and Stationary category. Hello SWFL also included Copperfish Books in an article about the resurgence of indie bookstores [18].
The Ann Arbor Book Society [19] has created a map [20] to lead book lovers around the literary Michigan city. Stops include Literati Bookstore [21], Crazy Wisdom Bookstore & Tearoom [22], and more.
On Monday, October 8, Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson’s national tour for Carmela Full of Wishes (G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers) took them to Frederick, Maryland, where Curious Iguana [23] bookstore hosted four events. The store recently launched the “Classroom Full of Wishes” campaign to raise money to purchase a copy of the book for every K-2 student in two area Title 1 schools. “Thanks to our generous customers and community partners, we received enough donations to provide more than 500 students with their very own signed copy of this wonderful book,” said Curious Iguana owner Marlene England.
