Here’s what’s happening in the world of indie bookstores this week:
Ferguson Books [7] in Grand Forks, North Dakota, will host the grand opening [8] for its second location, in Bismarck, on Saturday, November 10. “We have had a wonderful response from both downtown leaders and book customers from the Bismarck/Mandan area and, quite frankly, have been asked to locate here for many years,” said co-owner Dane Ferguson in an announcement on Facebook [9].
Harvey’s Tales [10] is now open in Geneva, Illinois. Its grand opening [11] was held on October 13 and featured live music.
Turn the Page [12] in Westfield, Indiana, is now open [13].
The Book Bungalow [14] opened in St. George [15], Utah, on September 26; a grand opening celebration featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony, ice cream, giveaways, and a puppet show will be held on October 19.
The Country Bookshop [16] in Southern Pines, North Carolina, is marking 65 years [17] in business this year.
Third Place Books [18] in Seattle, Washington, will celebrate its 20th birthday [19] the first weekend in November with comedian and writer Abbi Jacobson.
Lexi Beach of Astoria Bookshop [20] in Queens, New York, penned a Twitter thread [21] about supporting indie bookstores that was covered by Electric Lit [22].
Susan Richmond of Inklings Bookshop [23] in Yakima, Washington, talked with the Yakima Herald [24] about what it’s like to run an indie bookstore.
The Midtown Scholar Bookstore [25] hosted the 6th Annual Harrisburg Book Festival [26] last weekend.
Architectural Digest featured a list of “The Most Beautiful Independent Store in Every State in America [27],” which included Oxford Exchange [28] in Tampa, Florida; The Last Bookstore [29] in Los Angeles; Wild Rumpus [30] in Minneapolis; Square Books [31] in Oxford, Mississippi; and Fact & Fiction [32] in Missoula, Montana.
Hoodline named The Tattered Cover [33], BookBar [34], and City Stacks Books and Coffee [35] as top bookstores in Denver [36], Colorado, as well as Harvard Book Store [37], the MIT Press Bookstore [38], and Porter Square Books [39] as the best bookstores in Cambridge [40], Massachusetts.
